Tea and Intrigue

In Stephen Frears’ directorial debut, Albert Finney plays Eddie Ginley, a mediocre nightclub entertainer and bingo caller facing a mid-life crisis on this thirty-first birthday. Ginley buys himself a trenchcoat, advertises as a private eye, and starts talking like Humphrey Bogart. When someone answers his ad, he finds himself in over his head investigating arms dealing and murder. Part noir spoof, part thriller, this film manages to balance parody with a genuinely interesting plot that goes beyond merely sending up a genre.
