Directed by John Frankenheimer | Burt Lancaster, Paul Scofield
It’s near the end of the Second World War the Allies are nearing Paris, and the Nazis are making a last ditch effort to loot artistic treasures from France. Burt Lancaster plays resistance cell leader Paul Lebiche, who sets out to sabotage the departure of a train loaded with modern paintings. Jeanne Moreau is the sultry widow who assists him, and Paul Scofield is the villainously cultured Nazi general absconding with French culture. An excellent cast and terrific action sequences make for a nail-biting battle of wits. This film is loosely based on Rose Valland’s non-fiction book and memoir, Le Front de l’Art.
