Mechanics’ Institute is proud to participate in Bloomsbay - Ulysses 100, a city-wide celebration for the 100th anniversary of James Joyce’s epic novel Ulysses, one of the great innovations of modern literature. We are delighted to partner with the Consulate General of Ireland of San Francisco, the San Francisco Public Library, UC-Berkeley, Irish Studies Program, City Lights Books & Publishing and other collaborators.

12:00 Noon - Virtual Literary Tribute with Catherine Flynn, author of The Cambridge Centenary Ulysses: The 1922 Text with Essays and Notes and Judith Gurewich (Other Press) and Joan Tarrida (Galaxia Gutenberg), co-publishers of Ulysses: An Illustrated Edition

Mechanics’ Institute will will kick off Bloomsday with an online noon-time literary tribute with author Catherine Flynn who will share highlights from her much anticipated book, The Cambridge Centenary Ulysses: The 1922 Text with Essays and Notes published by Cambridge University Press, which features scholarly essays, archival photographs, maps, and Joyce’s schemata. This midday program includes a conversation with Judith Gurewich, Publisher of Other Press ( NY) and Joan Tarrida, Publisher of Galaxia Gutenberg (Barcelona), who are co-publishers of the stunning new Ulysses: An Illustrated Edition featuring the striking illustrations by renowned Spanish neo-figurative artist Eduardo Arroyo (1937–2018).
5:00 pm - 7:30 PM - Onsite Bloomsday Community Celebration at Mechanics’ Institute, Performances, Live Music and Readings
This evening event features an annual gathering of Joycean celebrants for community readings, and performances with musicians Anne Bingham Goess (fiddle, vocals), Eamonn Flynn (piano, vocals), Jason Pollack (flute) and actors Bruce Bierman, John Ilyin, Esther Mulligan and Simon Winheld. Performances directed by Bruce Bierman. A seisun (jam session) follows with the musicians! Wear your festive Bloomsday best and bring your favorite readings to share! A Bloomsday Plate will be served and libations will be available for purchase!
