The return of the TNM means the return of the newsletter, with news from our club and from the chess community

 

2019 Spring TNM Brings New Format and 15 Titled Players

The start of the new Spring TNM got off to an amazing start, with a full house experiencing a 3 section TNM for the first time ever. 108 players have registered so far to compete in a 3 section event; Championship (2000+), A/B (1600-1999) and under 1600. The championship section brought out some of the top players in the Bay Area, including 2-time U.S. Champion GM Patrick Wolff. Some of our top young stars have shown up to compete, including FM Josiah Stearman, FM Ezra Chambers, FM Andy Lee and NM Derek O’Connor. We also have some of the strongest female players competing, including WGM Carla Heredia, WFM Mugi Tsegmed and WFM Natalya Tsodikova. The sparks flew right out of the gate on Board 1, with GM Wolff showing his form with a dynamic win over Steven Gaffagan. It was an exciting start to what will be the largest TNM field in some time.

Other Ways to Follow Live Chess @ Mechanics’ Institute

We are looking for new and exciting ways to bring our events to the chess community. Our TNM top boards can be followed through the Mechanics Live Chess link on the club homepage.

We also briefly successfully tested our Twitch channel MechanicsChess in which we will do live commentary on Round 2 of the TNM this coming week. FM Paul Whitehead and guest commentators will break down the action. To follow the games and commentary and comment and ask questions, please visit our channel on Tuesday. Coverage begins at 7:15 pm.

 

NM Eric Yuhan Li wins Wilkerson Memorial

The 19th Max Wilkerson Memorial was held the weekend of March 15-17 and NM Eric Yuhan Li, the country’s top rated 11 year old, took clear 1st with a score of 4/5. This event was a 3-day event with a time control of G/90 +30. There were 27 players total.

 

New Monday Night FIDE Rapids

 

March 18th was our first ever Monday Night Rapid event. While it drew only 9 players, I can tell you it was a really fun event that I think will really catch on. NM Conrado Diaz took clear first with 3.5/4 and Jahaan Ansari won the under 1600 prize. Time control is G/15 +2 with 4 rounds. The next FIDE rapid event will be on Monday April 1st. 2019 San Francisco Scholastic Chess Championship

On Saturday March 23rd we will have our annual San Francisco Scholastic Chess Championship, which is this year sponsored by First Republic Bank. This is a FREE event for kids, with one open rated section and five other non-rated sections by grade level. This is a true celebration of chess in the San Francisco community, and we have over 220 registered to play at this writing. The event will be held in Golden Gate Park, 4 rounds, with GM Daniel Naroditsky giving a simultaneous exhibition.

 

CalChess Board of Directors

For those of you who don’t know, CalChess is the Northern California affiliate of the Unites States Chess Federation. This means that the U.S. Chess Federation recognizes whom CalChess delegates as organizers and champions for state championship events. I am currently a member of that Board, and I must admit the Board has not nearly reached its full potential. What it primarily does now is serve as a body that votes on who organizes what CalChess event and not too much else. Of the 7 voting members of the current Board, 3 are organizers that bid on events (Berkeley Chess School, Bay Area Chess and Mechanics’ Institute). If all 3 of us where to bid on the same event, then 3 of us would have to recuse ourselves from voting, putting the decision of who organizes events in the hands of 4 people. I don’t think organizers should be excluded from being on the Board, but I do think that having so many is not good for the chess community and is one of the reasons the Board is as it is, only a voting organization where many people are looking out for themselves. It is for this reason that I won’t seek reelection to the Board this year.

I encourage members of the chess community that care about chess and want to see CalChess do more to interact and help develop programs in addition event organizing to get engaged and realize the full potential of CalChess. We need members of the chess community to fill these seats, encourage transparency, debate ideas and vote their conscious. Everyone will be better off for it, and we could use some fresh new ideas. It was only barely last year that CalChess members were allowed to vote at any time during Election Day, rather than having to cast the vote at the Board meeting, potentially disenfranchising people that may have had to work, take care of family, or have other commitments. I encourage the chess community to learn more about CalChess.

Read minutes of past meetings, follow what has been going on, and think about how you might make a difference for the better in our chess community. Elections are held over the Labor Day State Championship, and nominations around July/August.

 

PRO Chess League Update

The San Francisco Mechanics PRO Chess League team closed out the season at Battle Royale #3 with a solid performance. While they did not make the playoffs, they finished ahead of Seattle and San Diego and avoided relegation. This means the San Francisco Mechanics will be back for the next season of the PRO Chess League. Thanks to all the players who participated, and fought hard every week. I know many of the players at Mechanics enjoyed following the action on the screen and we all had fun with the live commentary. Thanks to David Pruess and Andy Lee for their time and work, we look forward to the next season!

 

Forty-Seven Years Ago...

My brother Jay and I joined the Mechanics’ Institute Chess Club in late 1972, soon after Bobby Fischer wrestled the World Championship title from Boris Spassky in Iceland. We were chess-mad, spending as much time at the club as the constraints of school and our parents’ good will allowed. The club then was probably not what a parent of today would think of as a healthy environment for kids: thick with cigarette and cigar smoke, populated by adults (some without visible means of support) who might swear openly and tell off-color jokes...

Despite being the only kids in the club, despite being brash, green, and -- I confess -- sometimes downright obnoxious, Jay and I were accepted. We were treated as equals in this heady atmosphere of chess: chess learning, chess playing, chess-tournaments, and chess-talking chess-chess-chess!

The cast of characters was endless: Morgan, pop-eyed, shouting, “Give the boy a break! You can’t do that, that’s impossible!” as he checkmated some unsuspecting tyro; Alexander Sinkevitch, a  Russian émigré -- never seen without dark sunglasses and a visor -- showing chess problems; “Two-Gun “ Raymond Conway, the club’s director at the time: with his stogie and his red nose, he resembled W.C. Fields. There were waiters from the Palace Hotel, there were cabbies and bankers, psychiatrists and lawyers, and there were gamblers on their way to Bay Meadows or Golden Gate Fields.

With the recent passing of Steve Brandwein (my predecessor as Chess Room Coordinator) and Peter Grey (who joined the Mechanics’ Institute in the 1960’s), as well as the untimely death of my brother (from cancer in 2011) the numbers of those who greeted me so warmly 44 years ago are fast dwindling. Yet the chess club lives on.

As new eccentrics have replaced the old (you know who you are!), with tech-workers dropping by on their lunch breaks and more women and children playing in the club than ever before, I want to extend my thanks to the few who remain from those distant old days, those who welcomed my brother and I so unreservedly, friends from the land of chess; Tony Lama, Joe Tracy, and Peter Stevens: May your time never run out.

 

Wednesday Night Blitz Update

Expert Carlos Davila was the convincing winner of the March 21st edition of the Wednesday Night Blitz with 10 point from 12 games. Experts Jules Jelinek and Arthur Ismakov were joined by the strong unrated Romulo Sylvestri in a 3-way tie for 2nd with 8-4 scores. 14 players battled it out under the watchful eye of TD Jules Jelinek.

Unusual Openings

This week: Bird’s Opening

We have been examining endgames for the past months, but now we will switch to a practical problem that many players face: how to deal with an opponent’s special pet opening. Such openings are not theoretically very dangerous. They are unusual because they neglect some aspect of “classical” play, such as occupying the center, quick development or king safety. Nonetheless each of these openings has their points and can be unpleasant to face when your opponent is a devoted specialist. This week we investigate Bird’s Opening. 1. f4, named after the 19^th century English master H. E. Bird.

The idea of White's first move is to control the e5 square, which discourages 1...e5 by Black, and also plans a strategy of controlling the dark squares after the usual follow up 2. Nf3.

The most classic line of the Bird's is: 1.f4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e3 c5 4.b3 Nc6 5.Bb5 Bd7 6.Bb2 e6 7.0-0 Be7 8.d3 0-0

Both sides have developed sensibly yet a devoted Bird's player will be happy with the White side and the dark square play on the long a1-h8 diagonal.

Sometimes Black chooses to be aggressive at the start with From/^s Gamibt: 1.f4 e5!? 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6

Which has the threat of Qh4+ and mate in two. Yet White can prevent this and probably gain some edge though with complications: 4.Nf3 g5 5.d4 g4 6.Ng5 f5 7.e4 h6 8.e5

Note that if White answers From's Gambit with 2. e4 then we have transposed to the King's Gambit.

Is Bird's Opening so terrifying then? Not really. If you want an easy recommendation for a line as Black against the Bird's, I suggest the following: 1.f4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.e3 c5 4.Be2 Bg7 5.0-0 0-0

with an equal game. Black will follow with Nc6 and ..d6 or d5 depending on whether you feel you need to control the d5 square.
