In this Hollywood refurbishing of H.G. Wells’ science fiction novella, Rod Taylor is the intrepid time traveler, H. George Wells. Obsessed with what he imagines to be the utopian future of humanity, he enters a world eight centuries in the future, where books have been allowed to crumble into dust and humanity is divided between the passive, child-like Eloi and the savage Morlocks. Screenwriter David Duncan updated Wells’ pessimistic ruminations on class and evolution into a fable about the consequences of nuclear war, while George Pal’s lively direction makes this vintage science fiction film a pleasure to watch.
