The Cambridge Centenary Ulysses: The 1922 Text with Essays and Notes -- ONSITE at Mechanics' Institute
with editor Catherine Flynn, Co-sponsored by UC Berkeley Irish Studies

Co-sponsored by UC Berkeley Irish Studies

The centennial for James Joyce’s Ulysses continues this fall with Catherine Flynn’s epic literary companion with 18 essays, illustrations, and commentary. The book is now available.

James Joyce's Ulysses is considered one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. This new edition - published to celebrate the book's first publication - helps readers to understand the pleasures of this monumental work and to grapple with its challenges. Copiously equipped with maps, photographs, and explanatory footnotes, it provides a vivid and illuminating context for the experiences of Leopold Bloom, Stephen Dedalus, and Molly Bloom, as well as Joyce's many other Dublin characters, on June 16, 1904. Featuring a facsimile of the historic 1922 Shakespeare and Company text, this version also includes Joyce's own errata as well as references to amendments made in later editions. Each of the eighteen chapters of Ulysses is introduced by a leading Joyce scholar. These richly informative pieces discuss the novel's plot and allusions, while also explaining crucial questions that have puzzled and tantalized readers over the last hundred years.

Catherine Flynn works on British and Irish modernist literature in a European avant-garde context. Her book, James Joyce and the Matter of Paris, appeared with Cambridge University Press (2019). For the hundred-year anniversary of Ulysses, she has put together The Cambridge Centenary Ulysses: The 1922 Text with Essays and Notes, a facsimile edition of the historic 1922 Shakespeare and Company text, featuring Joyce’s own errata as well as references to later amendments, along with maps, photographs, and footnotes, and an essay by a leading Joyce scholar on each of the eighteen episodes (forthcoming Cambridge University Press, 2022). She is also editing a volume of essays entitled The New Joyce Studies: Twenty-First Century Critical Revisions (forthcoming Cambridge University Press, 2022). She co-hosts the podcast U22 The Centenary Ulysses (available on iTunes and Spotify) with Rafael Aguilar, Max Ambrose, Emily Moell, and Louie Poore. Catherine Flynn joined the Department of English in 2012. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University’s Introduction to the Humanities Program from 2009 to 2012. She received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Yale University in 2009 and her B.A. in English and Philosophy from University College Cork in 2000. Previously, she practiced as an architect in Ireland and in Vienna, Austria; she has a B.Arch from University College Dublin.
