Underdogs continue to fight back in 2nd Round of TNM
Round 2 of the Summer TNM played to a jam-packed house, with 56 boards in play and hungry challengers looking to make a move up the leaderboard.
In the championship section, Isaiah Kim played a solid game to defeat one of the pre-tournament favorites FM Ezra Chambers on board 1. On board 2, WFM Mugi Tsegmed put serious pressure on NM Tenzing Shaw in a tricky endgame, but Shaw calculated well and held the draw. Also showcasing solid endgame play was NM Rui Yang Yan, who converted a rook and pawn endgame advantage into victory. Rui is the nations top 11 year old girl in the country and #5 11 year old overall. We will enjoy following her progress.

A full house is the norm now at our TNM!
Also in action is this week was the tournaments top seed FM Kyron Griffith. After taking a first round bye, we got the win this week and is in pursuit of the leaders.
The 1600-1999 section and the under 1600 section are both well balanced and competitive, and will surely take a few more rounds to clear the field. About 130 players are already participating in total with about an even distribution of players across the 3 sections. We have reached capacity for this tournament and have closed registration. It is exciting to see such a great turnout on Tuesday nights!

GM Sam Shankland In House!
GM Sam Shankland came to deliver a special pre tournament lecture before round 2 of the TNM, and players came in big numbers to listen. It was a pleasure t have him stop by before he embarks on a full summer of events that include a camp in Ne York and GM tournament in Biel, Switzerland.

Mechanics' Institute Chess Club Welcomes its New Team Member, Dr. Judit Sztaray!
Dr. Judit Sztaray joins our team on Monday June 10th and will be our club's General Manager of Youth Outreach and Events. We are looking to develop and grow our enrichment programming in the city and nearby communities and expand our events both regular and scholastic. We hope to organize events outside the Mechanics' Institute to engage the community, raise awareness regarding the Mechanics' Institute, and provide the highest quality chess events and service. She was 2017 USCF Organizer of the Year and has organized several state and national championship events. She was previously Executive Director of Bay Area Chess and we are very fortunate to have a talent of this caliber join us. We look for great things on the horizon!
Arthur Stamer Memorial Roundup
The 2019 Arthur Stamer Memorial saw quite a few on site entries from strong players, making a 33 player field for the 2 day open tournament held at the club. In the end, two young masters, FM Ezra Chambers and NM Eric Yuhan Li shared first with 5/6.

Mechanics PRO Chess League Team Wins in Their Opener
The San Francisco Mechanics PRO Chess League team won the 1st match of the summer season, defeating the San Diego Surfers. GM Daniel Naroditsky won his match against FM Alex Costello, and the Mechanics fans did their part to contribute to a 20-12-match victory. Fans are able to play in the match by signing up to the Mechanics' fan page.

Friendly Rivalries, Part 9

FM Richard Lobo was a big part of the San Francisco Bay Area Chess scene in the late 1970's and beyond. Consistently rated in the 2350 – 2450 range, he was a danger to everyone. Born in the UK, Richard kept his English accent. Knowing his considerable chess skills were formed in another country made him somehow a tough opponent... at first.
To sum up: Richard won our first two encounters, but I was 4.5 out of 5 after that. This was over the course of 7 years.
Our games seemed to follow a pattern, a pattern that worked for Richard for a while, but then didn't: Let the kid attack, then rob him of his share and go home.
But in the end I think I proved a point about chess itself: everything else being equal, it's better to be the aggressor, and more profitable to attack.
So in the end I took the money and ran.

This week: Emanuel Lasker
Emanuel Lasker was the second official World Chess Champion and the one with the longest reign. He held the title for an incredible 27 years, from 1894 when he beat Steinitz, to 1921 when he lost the title to Capablanca. Lasker was born in Berlinchen Prussia in the 19th Century and is always counted as German, but now his hometown is called Barlinek and is part of Poland after two world wars. Lasker was also a doctor of mathematics and worked with commutative algebra and polynomial rings, but it was chess that was his true calling.
It is somewhat difficult to describe Lasker's chess style, as he would use all the opportunities presented him. He was of course well ahead of most others in positional play, but he relied on tactics many times and was extremely alert to sudden opportunities for combinations and attack. He was probably the first to introduce psychological aspects of play. He could take an opponent out of his "comfort zone" and force him into a real fight. In this he was a precursor to players such as Tal, Korchnoi and Fischer who were also uncompromising champions.

This is one of the most famous games ever played. At the time Capablanca was leading the tournament and needed only to draw. Lasker chooses an innocuous looking opening, but one that requires active play from Black to keep equal chances. The cleaver use of psychology and the tournament situation led Capa to play passively and allowed Lasker to build up the position. 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Bxc6 dxc6 Nowadays people play 5. 0-0 first. 5.d4 exd4 6.Qxd4 Qxd4 The endgame is equal, with the two bishop compensating for the doubled pawns. Yet Black must do something with his potential activity. 7.Nxd4
