Underdogs continue to fight back in 2nd Round of TNM

Round 2 of the Summer TNM played to a jam-packed house, with 56 boards in play and hungry challengers looking to make a move up the leaderboard.

In the championship section, Isaiah Kim played a solid game to defeat one of the pre-tournament favorites FM Ezra Chambers on board 1. On board 2, WFM Mugi Tsegmed put serious pressure on NM Tenzing Shaw in a tricky endgame, but Shaw calculated well and held the draw. Also showcasing solid endgame play was NM Rui Yang Yan, who converted a rook and pawn endgame advantage into victory. Rui is the nations top 11 year old girl in the country and #5 11 year old overall. We will enjoy following her progress.

WFM Mugi Tsegmed (left) and NM Tenzing Shaw battle early on in their game on board 2 while Isaiah Kim (white) and FM Ezra Chambers face off on board 1

A full house is the norm now at our TNM!

Also in action is this week was the tournaments top seed FM Kyron Griffith. After taking a first round bye, we got the win this week and is in pursuit of the leaders.

The 1600-1999 section and the under 1600 section are both well balanced and competitive, and will surely take a few more rounds to clear the field. About 130 players are already participating in total with about an even distribution of players across the 3 sections. We have reached capacity for this tournament and have closed registration. It is exciting to see such a great turnout on Tuesday nights!

Friendly Rivalries, Part 9

By FM Paul Whitehead

FM Richard Lobo was a big part of the San Francisco Bay Area Chess scene in the late 1970's and beyond. Consistently rated in the 2350 – 2450 range, he was a danger to everyone. Born in the UK, Richard kept his English accent. Knowing his considerable chess skills were formed in another country made him somehow a tough opponent... at first.

To sum up: Richard won our first two encounters, but I was 4.5 out of 5 after that. This was over the course of 7 years.

Our games seemed to follow a pattern, a pattern that worked for Richard for a while, but then didn't: Let the kid attack, then rob him of his share and go home.

But in the end I think I proved a point about chess itself: everything else being equal, it's better to be the aggressor, and more profitable to attack.

So in the end I took the money and ran.

A tremendous fighting game. Again Black presses and should keep the Queens on with 37...Qg5. White again keeps a cool head. Through the next phase Black keeps pushing but 51...Rg3 is a step in the wrong direction (51...Rh7). Black's sacrifice with 52...Nxe4 and 53...Nxd5 is worth no more than a draw at best, and Black was not up to the task. Again, Richard had fought off my aggression and won. 1.c4 g6 2.Nc3 Bg7 3.d4 d6 4.e4 Nf6 5.f3 0-0 6.Be3 e5 7.d5 c6 8.Bd3 b5 9.Nge2 bxc4

Finally I was able to beat Richard, and with Black to boot. White comes under a devastating attack. A bit of a rout. In a sharp variation of the Sicilian just a few mis-steps can lead to disaster, and 14...Nxb4?! (14...Qxb4) followed by 15...e5? (15...Kh8 makes sense) are the culprit moves here. I think this is a nice game, although White is too cooperative. Moves like 13.Bc4 and 18.g3 seem lackadaisical. The game takes another sharp turn, and maybe White can hold with 24.Bxe4. He doesn't get another chance, and Black crashes through. 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6

Our only draw. Black comes out of the opening with a much better minor piece but a pawn down. Over pressing with 19...b5?! is Black's stock-in-trade, and his desperado with 26...Nxf3!? might have lost brilliantly to the counter-desperado 27.Bxf7+! but Richard chose not to go there. White's insipid opening play brings him nothing, but Black makes a significant error with 18...c4? (18...Rab8). After 20.Qb6 White is probably winning, or close to it. Black submits to deadly pin on the a-file rather than lose a pawn, but there's not much of a future in that. His attempts at counter play are easily thwarted. Last week's problem:

This week's problem:

White to move and mate in 3, Kenneth Howard 1925

Nick de Firmian's Column: Learn from the World Champions

This week: Emanuel Lasker

Emanuel Lasker was the second official World Chess Champion and the one with the longest reign. He held the title for an incredible 27 years, from 1894 when he beat Steinitz, to 1921 when he lost the title to Capablanca. Lasker was born in Berlinchen Prussia in the 19th Century and is always counted as German, but now his hometown is called Barlinek and is part of Poland after two world wars. Lasker was also a doctor of mathematics and worked with commutative algebra and polynomial rings, but it was chess that was his true calling.

It is somewhat difficult to describe Lasker's chess style, as he would use all the opportunities presented him. He was of course well ahead of most others in positional play, but he relied on tactics many times and was extremely alert to sudden opportunities for combinations and attack. He was probably the first to introduce psychological aspects of play. He could take an opponent out of his "comfort zone" and force him into a real fight. In this he was a precursor to players such as Tal, Korchnoi and Fischer who were also uncompromising champions.

(1) Pillsbury,Harry - Lasker,Emanuel
St. Petersburg, 1895

A magnificent game from Lasker that seems thoroughly modern. It could be a masterpiece from on of today's top players, yet it was played in the 19th century. 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 c5 5.Bg5?!

Lasker_513

Nowadays most common is 5. cxd5 exd5 6. g3 with a classical Tarrasch variation. 5...cxd4 6.Qxd4 Nc6 7.Qh4 Be7 8.0-0-0 Qa5 9.e3 Bd7

Lasker_514

Lasker is concerned with devolopment and gaining an attack on the white king. Positional considerations like an isolated queen pawn are secondary. It should be noted that the computer suggests 9...h6 which is also strong. 10.Kb1 h6 11.cxd5 exd5 12.Nd4 0-0

Lasker_515

Now 13. Bxh6 loses to Ne4, so White must part with the dark squared bishop. 13.Bxf6 Bxf6 14.Qh5 Nxd4 15.exd4 Be6 16.f4 Rac8 17.f5

Lasker_516

17...Rxc3!? 18.fxe6 Ra3!

Lasker_517

Uncompromisng attacking play! Lasker uses his lead in development to push the initiative at the cost of a whole rook. 19.exf7+ Rxf7 20.bxa3 Qb6+

Lasker_518

21.Bb5 Pillsbury had no choice but to give back some material. 21. Ka1 Bxd4+ or 21. Kc1 Rc7+ would be fatal. 21...Qxb5+ 22.Ka1 Rc7?! A mistake from Lasker. 22...Qc4! 23. Qg4 Re7 and Re4 would have won quickly. 23.Rd2 Rc4 24.Rhd1?! Rc3?! 25.Qf5 Qc4 26.Kb2?

Lasker_519

Pillsbury needed to play 26. Kb1 and his king would be safe. Now comes a stunning blow. 26...Rxa3!! After previously sacrificing one rook Lasker now gives away the second one. 27.Qe6+ Kh7 28.Kxa3

Lasker_520

28...Qc3+ 29.Ka4 b5+! 30.Kxb5 Qc4+

Lasker_521

31. Ka5 Bd8+ is the end. Pillsbury resigned. 0-1

(2) Lasker,Emanuel - Capablanca,Jose Raul
St. Petersburg, 1914

This is one of the most famous games ever played. At the time Capablanca was leading the tournament and needed only to draw. Lasker chooses an innocuous looking opening, but one that requires active play from Black to keep equal chances. The cleaver use of psychology and the tournament situation led Capa to play passively and allowed Lasker to build up the position. 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Bxc6 dxc6 Nowadays people play 5. 0-0 first. 5.d4 exd4 6.Qxd4 Qxd4 The endgame is equal, with the two bishop compensating for the doubled pawns. Yet Black must do something with his potential activity. 7.Nxd4

Lasker_522

7...Bd6 8.Nc3 Ne7 9.0-0 0-0 10.f4 Re8 11.Nb3 f6 12.f5!?

Lasker_523

Lasker takes a backward e-pawn, but the f5 pawn restricts Black's pieces. 12...b6 13.Bf4 Bb7?! 13...Bxf4 would be a slight improvement. 14.Bxd6 cxd6 15.Nd4 Rad8 16.Ne6 Rd7 17.Rad1

Lasker_524

White has just a small edge here with the strong knight on e6. 17...Nc8?! This is passive. Capa needs to open lines for his pieces. 17...c5 would keep the disadvantage to a minimum. 18.Rf2 b5 19.Rfd2 Rde7

Lasker_525

20.b4! Kf7 21.a3 Ba8 22.Kf2 Ra7 23.g4

Lasker_526

Lasker slowly builds up the position. He takes space on both wings and gradually prepares for a breakthrough. 23...h6 24.Rd3 a5 25.h4 axb4 26.axb4 Rae7 27.Kf3 Rg8 28.Kf4 g6 29.Rg3 g5+

Lasker_527

30.Kf3! Nb6 30...gxh4 31. Rh3 would mop up on the h-file. 31.hxg5 hxg5 32.Rh3 Rd7 33.Kg3 Ke8 34.Rdh1 Bb7

Lasker_528

35.e5! White had built up a big advantage, but cashing in is always an issue. This sacrifice, clearing the e4 square is a crushing blow. If 35...c5 36. Rh8 decides. 35...dxe5 36.Ne4 Nd5 37.N6c5 Bc8 38.Nxd7 Bxd7

Lasker_529

39.Rh7 Rf8 40.Ra1 Kd8 41.Ra8+ Bc8 42.Nc5

Lasker_532

10...Nf4! 11.Bxf4 exf4 12.Nf3 Bg4 13.h3 Bh5 14.Rb1 b6 15.Qd2?! Bxf3 16.gxf3 White has an open file for the doubled pawns but Black holds the edge. 16...Nh5 17.Kh2 Qf6 18.Rg1 Rae8 19.d4 Kh8

Lasker_533

20.Rb5 Qh6 21.Rbg5 f6 22.R5g4 g6

Lasker_534

We have a tense, unbalanced position with just a small edge for Black. 23.Bd3 Re7 24.c4?! This allows Lasker to reposition his knight to a better location. 24...Ng7! 25.c3 25. Qxf4 Qxf4 26. Rxf4 Ne6 would win the d-pawn. 25...Ne6 26.Bf1 f5 27.R4g2 Rf6! 28.Bd3?! g5!
