As part of our March Magazine Madness event in the Library, we would like to introduce you to a few of the new titles we have recently added to our 3rd floor collection. We try and keep a diverse and eclectic collection of titles covering every subject available to our members and the new magazines we now carry follow that theme. We’ve added subscriptions in literature, history, investing, hobbies, food, health, lifestyle, and more. Members can borrow 5 magazines at a time from our 3rd floor collection of circulating titles and of older issues found on 2B. We have a binder on the table by the magazine collection with a list of all the titles we carry or you can visit our website and view the entire magazine collection in the catalog. And don’t forget to come to our Annual Magazine Sale taking place on the 3rd floor this month! Here’s a sampling of what we have added.
Originally founded as Books Abroad in 1927, World Literature Today is a bimonthly journal that celebrates international literature and culture. Its mission is to serve as an engaging, informative index to contemporary international literature and includes essays, poetry, fiction, book reviews, and commentaries on individual writers from all over the world. In addition, World Literature Today supports interdisciplinary perspectives and features articles covering arts, politics, and culture as they relate to international literature.
The Nutrition Action Health Letter is published by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a non-profit consumer health advocacy group that focuses on nutritional education and consumer awareness. The CSPI advocates for more accurately defined nutrition and food labeling and the Nutrition Action Health Letter highlights and supports this vision. Topics covered include tips for lowering your cancer risk, determining appropriate levels of metals in your food, brand name ratings, and healthy recipes. American History is the latest addition to our popular historical magazine collection. American History recalls many of the oft repeated stories of this country’s past but adds lesser known tales to the subjects, often changing the perception of what we remember from school. One recent article describes the rocker Phil Collin’s huge collection of Alamo artifacts and the stories behind many of the pieces. Also included are essays, photography, artwork, and creative storytelling that bring America’s rich historical past alive with each bimonthly issue.
To appease our foodies, one of our newest cooking titles is the Food Network Magazine. This monthly food/entertainment magazine is based on the popular television network and offers access to many of America's favorite TV chefs including Alton Brown, Rachael Ray, Bobby Flay, and Morimoto. You get behind-the-scenes look at their shows, find out who wins their head to head challenges, and you can try cooking one of their original or recreated dish recipes found in the magazine. The Food Network Magazine also has write ups on kitchen tools, food products, new restaurants, and over 100 delicious recipes with each new issue. Chow down!
For the nature lover and hobbyist we have BirdWatching. This magazine comes out once a month and includes descriptions of various bird species, where to find them, how to attract them, and how to identify. You can find out why Blue Jays are blue or read about the Cliff Swallows 1,000 piece mud pellet nest. BirdWatching has articles by experts in the field (ornithology), science and conservation news, and amazing photography of birds in action that will appeal to both beginning bird watchers to the more serious birders adventuring your local park.
