The Children’s Collection on the 2nd floor of the Library is small, and unknown to many of our members, but is a good place to browse when you have children coming to your home this summer.   In addition to a core collection of award-winning children’s books, and a good assortment of picture books to share with children of all ages, we have compiled a special collection of fiction and non-fiction books about San Francisco and the Bay Area.

Here is a sample of local interest titles. Look for the shelf where all the books have a sticker at the top of the spine: SF/local interest.

Nate the Great, San Francisco Detective by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and Mitchell Sharmat, is a fun story set in San Francisco. This is a chapter book suitable for a reader in grades 1-3.

Fanny at Chez Panisse is a “restaurant adventures” book, says author Alice Waters. In addition to some fun stories, the 46 recipes will provide hours of fun, with a satisfying conclusion.

Kai’s Journey to Gold Mountain: an Angel Island Story by Katrina Saltonstall Currier. Read this true story of a 12 year old boy before you visit the Immigration Station on Angel Island.

Levi Strauss Gets a Bright Idea or : a Fairly Fabricated Story of a Pair of Pants by Tony Johnston. Everyone who has worn a pair of “Levi’s” will enjoy this tall tale.

Julia Morgan Built a Castle   by Celeste Mannis. If your travels around the area include a look at any of Julia Morgan’s designs, including Hearst Castle, read this book first. Suitable for all ages.
