Spring is in the air!  The warm weekends and longer days beckon many of us outside, and this month I decided to focus on one of my favorite outdoor activities: cycling.  The Bay Area is ripe with roads and mountain trails to provide many hours and day of bike time.  Whether you’re getting reacquainted with your bike after years off the saddle or already an avid weekend cyclist, we have a number of titles that may be of interest to you.

Northern California Cycling (Moon Outdoors) - 917.94 M819 2007

If you’re ready to get on your bike but have no idea where to go, this is the guidebook for you.  Chapter 1 covers nearly 50 rides all beginning in the Bay Area, and if you’ll be traveling to wine country, Tahoe, or Yosemite with your bike, you’ll still find plenty of rides in this handy compilation.  Each route notes the surface terrain, distance, difficulty, and elevation gain.  Turn-by-turn directions and an elevation map are also included.

The Urban Biking Handbook: The DIY guide to building, rebuilding, tinkering with, and repairing your bicycle for city living - 796.6 H152

This is a good resource even if you aren’t an urban cyclist.  This small book explains the differences between bike types, covers basic maintenance, and provides tips for using your bike in the city.  If you’re mechanically inclined, you can find all the information you need inside these pages to safely dismantle and reassemble your bike.

The noblest invention : an illustrated history of the bicycle / by the editors of Bicycling magazine - 629.227 N75

If you enjoy bikes as an art form, this coffee table book will be a fun journey into the history of bicycles.  It contains little practical information, but features beautiful glossy photos of bikes past and present.  A must see for any cycling fan.

Bicycling Magazine

If you’re an avid cyclist already, take advantage of our subscription to Bicycling Magazine.  This monthly publication provides drills, gear recommendations, upcoming rides, exercise tips, and more.  My favorite column is The Pursuit by Bill Strickland which serves as a mindful reflection on the experience of cycling.
