Technical Services Manager

The Technical Services Manager is responsible for providing leadership, oversight, and management of all library technical services operations: acquisitions, cataloging, serials, e-resources, systems administration, and the integrated library system. The position requires cataloging experience, familiarity with original cataloging practices, and a strong understanding of technology. The Technical Services Manager will supervise paraprofessional staff and will participate in management team and collection development activities. The Technical Services Manager also provides customer service, instruction, and programming to support the use of the library collection. Teamwork, flexibility, and organizational skills are key to the role. The position is full-time, onsite with remote work opportunities, and will be required to work some evenings and weekends.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Manage and plan all library technical service operations including acquisitions, cataloging, serials, systems administration, and the ILS.
  • Formulate and carry out long-term plans for cataloging and maintenance of accurate up-to-date records in the library catalog and improve the discovery of information.
  • Assist with the annual budget process for print and e-resource collections via analysis of usage reports and data provided by service providers.
  • Supervise up to 4 departmental staff and volunteers and manage the library’s interactions with vendors and other outside service providers to update, configure, and perform the essential tasks necessary to maintain the library catalog.
  • Oversee the functionality of the ILS, collaborating with the service provider on troubleshooting, updates, and improvements.
  • Perform original monographs cataloging.
  • Provide regularly scheduled professional contact, engagement programming, and direct instruction to patrons and guests.
  • Manage assigned areas of the library collection to maintain, enhance, and promote its use.
  • Participate in the development of library policies and procedures, and in staff development and continuing education activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) required.
  • Previous work experience in cataloging and library technical services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MARC, RDA, AACR2, DDC, LCSH, and LCGFT.
  • Experience working with an ILS, preferably Sierra.
  • Experience working with OCLC, Connexion, and MarcEdit.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of direct supervision and leadership. Preference for management of a team in a library setting.
  • Computer and technology skills including databases, Google Workspace, and MS Office.
  • Specialized subject knowledge for collection development.
  • Strong organizational, problem solving, project management, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills - ability to communicate effectively with members, the public, direct reports, and other staff.
  • Commitment to professional development and staying current with trends and developments in technical services and the library profession.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities/projects simultaneously, complete assigned projects in a timely manner, and demonstrate flexibility to accommodate shifting priorities.
  • Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality of sensitive information, as well as maintain consistent accuracy and thoroughness to details.
  • Availability to work rotating Saturdays and weekday evenings.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous systems administration training in the Sierra ILS or a willingness to learn.
  • Prior experience performing original monograph and serials cataloging.
  • Experience with LibraryIQ, Libby, and online library resources.
  • Direct communication with vendors and service providers.
  • Collection development experience in DEI materials, fiction, and/or comparative literature.
  • Previous experience in library programming and direct instruction to individuals.
  • Familiarity with chess or a willingness to learn.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • This is a full-time, exempt position.
  • The compensation for this position is $70,000-80,000 per annum, salary commensurate with experience.
  • Benefits include generous health-dental-vision insurance, paid vacation, holidays, and a 403(b) plan. Membership to Mechanics’ Institute is also provided.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually at low to moderate.
