Photograph of chess piecesMembership dues cover only 10% of the Mechanics' annual operating costs. The Institute relies on the annual fund to preserve our collections and building, and to sustain our ongoing programming and events, including:

  • Acquisitions of books, DVDs, CDs, periodicals and electronic resources
  • 70+ speaker events
  • 35+ CinemaLit film series events
  • Book discussion groups and writers groups
  • Youth Outreach Chess Program, serving 500 kids per week
  • Reference services operating six days a week
  • Classes on topics such as library resources, writing, and chess
  • Maintenance of our 9-story historic landmark building
  • Conservation of our archives

What your support provides:

$25 Can provide gourmet popcorn for two weeks at Cinemalit

$50 Can provide the cost of a full year of issues of Cook's IllustratedMs, or Dwell

$75 Can provide outreach services to homebound members for a full year

$100 Can provide a two hour Saturday Youth Chess Class

$250 Can provide a Grandmaster guest speaker for a one hour lecture before a round of the TNM

$500 Can provide the annual CinemaLit licensing fee

$1,000 Can provide space for the Brown Bag Mystery Readers book group to meet every month (since 2003!) for a full year

$2,500 Can provide monthly Writer's Lunches for an entire year

$5,000 Can provide member access to information on more than 7500 publicly traded companies in the Value Line Resource Center database

$10,000 Can provide the annual Spring Scholastic Chess tournament for 250 public school students
