You don't need to have read Hardy or Lawrence to enjoy this spoof. When the newly orphaned, thoroughly modern Flora Poste moves in with her decadent country relatives, her first act is to start scrubbing. Her next is to introduce the Starkadders to the 20^th century. Automobiles, contraception, moving pictures, and psychiatry all work their magic on the smoldering, oversexed Seth, his obsessed mother, the annoyingly elfin Elfine, and even the sinister matriarch, Ada Doom.
