Happy Thanksgiving form the Mechanics' Institute Chess Club!

Hello everyone,

We wanted to take this opportunity to thank our entire Mechanics' chess community for your support and participation. It is a pleasure for us to come to the club week after week and interact with everyone, receive feedback, discuss chess, laugh and joke, and to try new innovative things that we think lead the way in how chess is used to bring communities together. We will never be short of new ideas, nor the courage to try new things and make adjustments if we feel it will enhance the club and the experience to our players.

The Mechanics' Institute Chess Club has existed since 1854, and it has a reputation as one of the world's most famous and important chess clubs. We have had many world champions at our club. There is a very famous picture of Jose Raul Capablanca playing A.J. Fink at Mechanics'. Bobby Fischer has given a simul there. The stories people like John Donaldson, Paul Whitehead, and many others tell on a regular basis about people and players at the club are far too numerous than even all the MI newsletters combined can tell. The chess club is a refuge for many to come inside and be a part of a culture that is accepting and where people can engage in an activity no matter what your personal background is. At Mechanics', rich/poor, old/young, no matter what your cultural background, everyone comes together and shares in the joy of chess. Our club represents something needed in many other areas in this world. We are honored to be a part of that.

Jose Raul Capablanca playing at Mechanics' in 1916

To our chess community, thank you for us, and we wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Regards,

Staff of the Mechanics' Institute Chess Club

Due to the holidays, this week we have a short newsletter. Next week we are back with the full version, including Paul's and Nick's columns and blitz and tournament reports!

TNM Round 6

Championship Section of TNM Has New Leader After Gaffagan Defeats Wong, Jonah Busch Continues Perfection in A/B Section, Mani Pulls Away in U/1600

Round 6 of the Fall TNM is in the books, and the Championship section sees a new person in sole possession of first. Steve Gaffaganpasses his first big test of the TNM, seizing an opportunity in the game and closing the show, pulling an upset of tournament leader NM Russell Wong. He is now the sole leader with 5/6. With three rounds to go, the competition will tighten up, as NM Eric Li won his game against Gianluca Pane to be in second place with 4.5/6. Also moving up the leaderboard was WFM Natalya Tsodikova after she defeated NM Michael Walder. Both these players are at 4/6 along with Kristian clemens and NM Larry Snyder. Lots of movement still possible for the title and glory of being the last champion of the 2019 TNM's.

Top 2 boards do battle in round 6, NM Eric Yuhan Li (left) gave Gianluca Pane his first defeat of the TNM

In the A/B section, Jonah Busch won a technical endgame against Ashik Uzzaman to stay perfect with 6/6. He is in the sole lead, a full point ahead of Gagik Babayan who is at 5/6. In sole third is Alexander Perlov at 4.5/6. These tough players will fight it out over the final 3 rounds in this very tough section.

Alexander Perlov takes his usual deep game stance as he defeated Glenn Kaplan to move into third place

In the under 1600, Venugopal Mani has pulled away into clear first after defeating Andy Vincent Ford. He is now at 5.5/6, with Mateo Hansen and Illia Gimelfarb at 5/6. Ther are three players sitting at 4.5/6, so there will be plenty of action still ahaead, and Mani will try to continue his play against game opponents in these ast few rounds.

Chess at UC Merced

by Aaron Thompson

Chess is expanding in the central valley. Before anything, I want to thank Judit Sztaray and Abel Talamantez from Mechanics’ for help making this possible. The popularity of chess has waxed and waned over time and to see a resurgence of Chess at the University of California, Merced is encouraging.  Some locations have a rich chess history and culture while other regions have very little resources or appreciation for chess. I recognize that, I am writing to likeminded people when I emphasize the benefits of chess as well as the artistry.  It is great to see more people getting the opportunity to be exposed to and grow in their appreciation of chess.

UC Merced has not had an active chess club in five years and the previous chess club had no connection to USCF.  As it turned out, the day before I planned to put up posters to poll interest on campus, my now friends Tomas Virgen and Anthony Tyler had set up tables and planned to restarting the UC Merced club too.  In the following weeks, we had a regularly meeting club going and signed up our five core members to the USCF. We then started with our first round robin tournament, and Judit was instrumental in helping me rate the games played. Watching something go from just an idea to reality like this was amazingly inspiring.

After that tournament was rated, and the profile of the UC club growing, two more players from our club wished to get into USCF. There are not a lot of chess players in Merced, but word spread and the community players took interest. Following another smaller tournament and some match play, the UC Merced Fall Open was born. After being posted on CalChess, I also reeled in some other players from the Merced area along with friend Cesar Tamondong, who helped supply boards, clocks, and a DGT for livestreaming. Two National Masters, Trevor Showalter and Martin Sullivan came and participated in the tournament. Over half of the participants had provisional ratings, as tournament chess is scarce in the area. Playing in a tournament setting focused their attention and gave them an opportunity to prove themselves.  Between rounds, there was such a sense of community and support and it was great to see some of the very strong players giving game analysis to the wide range of weaker players.

One of the biggest highlights of the event came from Abbas Siddiqui, who’s well outdated 1221 rating from 2015 does not nearly express his true strength.  His efforts, claiming 3 out of 4 games scored him a tie for second. Below is the game he lost, but the best show (in my opinion) of his skill.

Siddiqui, Abbas (1221) – NM Trevor Showalter (2233)

UC Merced Fall Open 2019, 23.11.2019

Annotations by Aaron Thompson

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Bd3 Bxd3 5.Qxd3 e6 6.f4 Nh6 7.Ne2 Nf5 8.Be3 c5 9.Qb5+ Qd7 10.Qxd7+ Kxd7 11.Bf2 cxd4 12.Nxd4 Nxd4 13.Bxd4 Nc6 14.Bf2 Be7 15.Nd2 Nb4 16.Kd1 Rhc8 17.a3

Nb4 was a very clever idea, but a3 is equally clever as [17…Nxc2, 18. Rc1] trapping the knight. Other shots here like Bc5 do not work either. Black is forced to go backwards.

17… Nc6 18.c3 b5 19.Rc1 a5 20.Nf3 b4 21.a4 bxc3 22.bxc3 Rab8 23.Ke2 Rb2+ 24.Nd2 f6 25.Rb1

Here, Abbas opted for a positional pawn sacrifice to take back the initiative. While this move does not entirely work, the thought process behind it comes from the very mature stance of not being as materialistic.

25… Rxb1 26.Rxb1 fxe5 27.fxe5 Nxe5 28.Bd4 Bf6 29.Rb7+ Rc7 30.Rb5 Nc6 31.Bb6 Rb7 32.Nb3 Rxb6

These two moves show how technically talented both players are. Abbas is choosing to target positional weaknesses while Trevor matched this threat by opting to sacrifice the exchange to push his center passed pawns up the board.

33.Rxb6 Kc7 34.Ra6 Bxc3 35.Nc5 e5 36.Ne6+ Kb7 37.Nc5+ Kc7 38.Ne6+ Kd7 39.Nxg7 d4 40.Rb6 e4 41.Rb7+

Unfortunately, this slight inaccuracy costs white the draw since it gives black the winning tempo with the following move.

41… Kc8 42.Rf7 d3+ 43.Kd1 e3

White Resigns; 0-1

Creation of this UC Merced Fall Open has really taught me quite a bit about the chess community and our members here are so thankful for the backing of the Mechanics Institute.    Most of the people involved have very little tournament experience and the UC Merced Fall Open helped provide a platform to bring in some strong players and help support chess in the central valley. The people that inspire me the most are often the ones who have very little in the way of resources, depth of chess culture, and experience but despite these challenges approach chess with enthusiasm and vigor. Chess is a wonderful endeavor with some many positive attributes, and although a fledgling group, it is fantastic that it is starting to blossom at UC Merced.

Scholastic Corner

Report from the first ever Thanksgiving Chess Camp

The scholastic program held the very first Thanksgiving camp at the Mechanics' Institute, serving families who are living and working in the city, while kids are already on Thanksgiving break.
We had our fun and young team of two coaches, Coach Andy and Coach Colin, taking care of the super energetic and fun group of 16 kids.
Two groups were formed: one beginner who were practicing the moves, learning opening principals, and reviewing basic yet famous games, and playing lots of lots of fun chess under the supervision of Coach Colin. The advanced campers, who already had chess tourament experience, or were fitting the stronger group were coached by Andew Schley, and were often tasked with problems, notation excercises, and paired up to challenge each other.
Overall, we are happy and thankful for the parents trusting us to educate and entertain their kids for these past three days. Hope to see many of them back for Winter break camp!

Kids' Swiss tournaments - report from last week and next one is TOMORROW!

Last Saturday we had our second tournament for kids only in November. Judit and her daughters especially enjoyed this event becuase we got to host many first time players from our after school classes. They were lucky to have the support of their coach, Coach Colin, who visited them for the first few rounds to observe and be there for them.
Alway fun to have such a happy and energetic group of kids compete in a quick kids tournament. Congratulations to section winners Jon & Taurus in the 700+ section, and Charlie in the combined u700+ for acing his very first tournament with a 4.0 score!
This coming Sunday, December 1st, is also our next one. We expect this to be a smaller tournament, but we encourage everyone to come down for a few hours of chess competition if you have the time.

Winter Chess Championship @ Hamilton School in Novato, CA
co-organizing with the Hamilton Chess Club

December 7 @ 10AM

Prepare for a full day of fun chess tournament at our friends, the Hamilton Chess Club.
We are co-organizing this fun day where kids can compete in one of three different sections: two of them are non-rated (so no USCF membership is needed), and based on their grade; and the third section is a USCF-rated section for all those who would like to see this counting towards their rating. In all we are expecting around 60-80 kids, but we have a maximum capacity of 100!
Trophies to top 10 players in each section, and medals to all others are guaranteed.
Honored guests will include Novato Mayor, MI Executive Director and several MI Board of Trustees and also in attendance coach of the Hamilton Chess Club, WGM Carla Heredia.
