DVD Selections: Best of 2014

After a busy holiday season, now is a wonderful time to relax and catch up on some of the great DVDs we added to the library's collection last year. From Oscar winners to indie documentaries, you will find our favorites at the 2nd floor DVD display. Here are some of our personal recommendations:

Bobbie recommends Trance, directed by Danny Boyle of Slumdog Millionaire fame.

Trance is a mind-bending thriller following a gang of art thieves. When the key player in their latest theft suffers amnesia their solution to send him to a hypnotist backfires when there is more to the therapist than meets the eye.

and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty first and foremost because in one scene the female lead sings David Bowie's Space Oddity. Beyond that it tells the story of a hero that is quintessentially Ben Stiller daydreaming his days away until the dreams become reality.

Heather recommends Much Ado About Nothing.

Joss Whedon produces Shakespeare as it was meant to be played – without modernizing any of the language, the stellar script and cast convey the humor, the malfeasance, and the love and longing that form the nucleus of the plot of Much Ado About Nothing. It’s got comedy, treachery, witty banter, great actors: Much Ado… is definitely one of my favorite films of 2014.

Chris recommends Star Trek: Into Darkness, the second installment of J.J. Abrams’ contribution to the perennial franchise.

Featuring a cameo from the city of San Francisco, tense action scenes, and plenty of self aware camp, this film was the highlight of summer’s blockbuster crop.
