Ever wonder what your fellow Mechanics’ Institute members are exploring? This year, members checked out nearly 16,000 items – with many of those circulating multiple times for a total circulation of more than 25,000. This year on July 22, the hundred year anniversary of the Preparedness Day bombing quietly came and went. The largest terrorist act in 20th century San Francisco killed 10 people and wounded 40 others when a bomb placed in a suitcase exploded during a huge parade staged to show that the U.S. was prepared to enter World War I.

Sometimes I start my day by getting lost. What I mean is, I go into the stacks in the Mechanics’ Institute Library, not looking for anything in particular, but letting myself become lost among the books. It can be wonderfully overwhelming in the stacks; turn one corner and you’re diving into the beautiful short stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer, the next floor you’re looking at Rita Moreno’s memoir, and just downstairs you’re reading the poetry of Adrienne Rich.

Have you found yourself facing surgery or long term illness? Has a disability left you homebound and unable to come into the library? Mechanics’ Institute Library has a program that allows us to mail you books, audiobooks and magazines.

The program is called Outreach for the Homebound and is limited to homebound members who are no longer able to visit the Library due to illness, injury or disability or who are caring for an ill, injured or disabled family member.
