Welcome Back!

Mechanics' Institute Library is excited to welcome members back to 57 Post Street for browsing, materials pick up, checkouts, computer use, personal research, and reading. We look forward to providing you with a safe environment to access our collections and services. 

The library is open Monday-Friday from 12-6 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm. Reservations are not required for in-person visits. The City of San Francisco Public Health Department has lifted mask requirements for vaccinated individuals. Face coverings are not required for vaccinated members and visitors. We ask that unvaccinated individuals wear a mask covering both nose and mouth per the City of San Francisco Health Order while inside the Mechanics' Institute building. For more information, please call 415-393-0102 during open hours.

Members can place online holds and pick up materials on the second floor library from 12-6 pm Monday-Friday and 10-3 pm on Saturdays. Materials may be returned inside the library or in the lobby bookdrop. The lobby is open Monday-Friday from 8 am - 6 pm and from 10-3 pm on Saturdays.

Public computers are available on both the second and third floors. 

Be sure to dress warmly as windows are open in compliance with health mandates.

Services Currently Available:

  • Browsing for materials to check out

  • Computer use on a first come, first served basis.

  • Limited seating for reading or using one’s own electronic devices

  • In-person reference

  • Interlibrary loan

  • Public printers are .15 per page for black and white copies and .30 per page for color copies. 

  • Daily newspapers: SFChronicle, New York Times, SF Business Times, Silicon Valley Business Journal, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, IBD Weekly, and Financial Times

  • Classrooms are open when not in use for library programs. Check our events calendar for a listing of in-person classes.
