The New Year brings a lot of new writing activities!

On January 20th Lynda Monk and Eric Maisel discussed how journaling can positively affect your writing practice. We have their book The Great Book of Journaling: How Journal Writing Can Support a Life of Wellness, Creativity, Meaning and Purpose in our collection, and it is full of ideas, advice, and examples that will help you put your inner thoughts on paper. If you are consistent with your journaling, 2023 could be your best writing year!

The next Writers’ Lunch, set for February 17 will be all about writing for contests. Join our community and learn strategies for placing high with speakers Ray Miles, Doug McAbee, and B. Lynn Goodwin, managing editor of WriterAdvice.com.

Speaking of writing contests, WriterAdvice.com seeks flash memoir - a story from your life. Focus on a moment that changed you and entertain, dazzle, and delight the reader. Entries  should be 750 words or less. Find details and prize information here.

Meanwhile, the San Francisco Writers Conference, our town’s own literary Old Home Week[end], is back in-person this Presidents’ Day holiday Feb 16-19. The speaker lineup includes several familiar faces from Mechanics’ Institute events and classes. While you are there, stop by the Women’s National Book Association’s table in the Hyatt’s Grand Ballroom to learn more about their upcoming Pitch-O-Rama event. This special event, where you can pitch your writing project with coaches, fellow writers, and publishing experts, will take place on April 29. Registrations are already starting.

After all this, while you are flushed with creative energy, enroll in Kate Farrell’s class Writing the Heroine’s Journey on Saturday, February 25. This in-person class will teach you how to use the “heroine’s quest” in your journaling or creative writing in order to channel your feminine side’s power. Kate is the author of Story Power: Secrets to creating, crafting, and telling memorable stories and is a regular contributor to our community.
