Improved Library by Mail - Outreach Services

For many years Mechanics’ Institute has offered a Homebound Outreach program to members who are no longer able to visit the Library in person due to illness or disability. We’ve recently expanded the offerings and have updated the program name to better reflect the improved service. We are happy to introduce Library by Mail - Outreach Services and welcome new registrants to join the program.

Library by Mail allows us to mail books, DVDs, music CDs, magazines, and audiobook CDs directly to members who are facing surgery, long term illness, are suffering a disability, or are caring for someone with an illness or disability that makes it difficult to come into the library.

To enroll in the Library by Mail - Outreach Service, complete the simple form and pay a one-time $25.00 registration fee. Materials are mailed free of charge to members through a special service offered by the U.S. Postal Service. You must supply a short letter signed by your doctor, health care provider, or nurse certifying the condition that allows you to receive library materials by mail.

There is a limit of four items per request and library materials are mailed to you for a six-week checkout period. You may choose to borrow books, DVDs, music CDs, magazines or audiobook CDs.

To register for this program, please complete the registration form or contact Cherilyn at 415-393-0101. We will have you on your way to home-delivered library materials in no time.

If you'd like to contribute resources or to assist with this program, contact 415-393-0102 or [email protected].

Featured Library Collection: Mechanics' Institute Member Work

Mechanics’ Institute is proud of our writers’ programs and offerings. As the members in our writers’ groups workshop their latest piece with colleagues and collaborate in our other programs related to the craft of writing (find the events here), we already have had quite a few talented members at the Mechanics’ Institute Library who are published authors and poets. Some more familiar members include Jack LondonDaniel HandlerGertrude Atherton, and our former chess director and current trustee John Donaldson

We are proud to showcase our members’ books on our shelves and in our collection and now have a “Featured Collection” display on the 2nd fl. that presents published materials from our members on a rotating basis. There are so many books and writings from our members that cover a range of topics and subject areas that it would be difficult for us to display them all at once so we’ve found another way to easily highlight these materials while browsing through the rows of books. How do you spot a member’s work in the stacks? We’ve labeled the books with a purple “Mechanics’ Institute Member Work” sticker on the spine. You can also search for a member author by typing in “Mechanics' Institute members work” or "members work" in the search field in our catalog, or for a complete list click here.

Homebound? Mechanics’ Institute Will Send Library Materials To You

Have you found yourself facing surgery or a long-term illness? Has a disability left you homebound and unable to come into the Library? Mechanics’ Institute Library has a program that allows us to mail you books, audiobooks, and magazines.

The program is called Outreach for the Homebound. It is strictly limited to homebound members who can no longer visit the Library due to illness, injury, or disability.

To enroll in Outreach, complete the simple form and pay a one-time $25.00 registration fee. Materials are mailed free of charge to members through a unique service offered by the U.S. Postal Service. You must supply a short letter signed by your doctor, health care provider, or nurse certifying the condition that makes it necessary for you to receive library materials by mail.

There is a limit of four items per request, and library materials are mailed to you for a six-week checkout period. You may choose to borrow books, magazines, or audiobooks. DVDs and music CDs, because of their fragile nature, are not included in the program.

Simply sign up using our online form:
