Anyone who knows British history knows how this film will end, but the wit of the screenplay, and Paul Scofield’s Oscar-winning performance as Sir Thomas More, the man who dared to say “no” to King Henry the VIII, make this familiar story both gripping and engaging. More is depicted here as a quiet man who discovers, perhaps to his own surprise, the limits imposed by his conscience. (“This is not the stuff of martyrs” he says of himself at one point.) Robert Shaw garnered an Academy Award nomination for his boisterous, hot-tempered depiction of King Henry VIII, and Vanessa Redgrave can be spotted in a brief cameo as Anne Boleyn.
