In this account, Matthew Broderick stars as the regiment's white commanding officer, Robert Gould Shaw, who fought the racism of both the Confederate and Union side. The movie inspires even as it confronts the realities of warfare. Denzel Washington won an Oscar for his performance as an angry escaped slave turned soldier.
