Directed by Douglas McGrath
Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Northam
The 1990s saw a spate of Jane Austen adaptations, including Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Mansfield Park. None were as much fun as Douglas Mcgrath's film starring Gwyneth Paltrow as the feckless, misguided young matchmaker, Emma Woodhouse. Paltrow's luminous performance makes Emma endearing even when she's misbehaving – which is in most of the film. Jeremy Northam is a dryly funny Mr. Knightley, and Sophie Thompson is touching as the hapless Miss Bates.
