Bootstrapping Community History

Western Neighborhoods Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that preserves and shares the history of San Francisco’s west side. Started in 1999 by volunteer historians, the organization inspired the creation of other local history groups, leads collaborative efforts to host citywide events such as San Francisco History Days, and curates one of the city's greatest historical photo archives. Founders Woody LaBounty and David Gallagher will outline the story of WNP’s successful journey from small website to community institution. Details include volunteer recruitment, online presence and social media, community involvement, and creating a digital archive on a limited budget.
