By the People, For the People: The Evolution and Future of Mechanics' Institutes in Australia

The success of Mechanics’ Institutes in Australia has, for the most part, relied entirely on the communities in which they were established. Institutes have thrived, faded and been revived again to take on the next challenge put forth by the people. They have faced some hard times, but through the support and motivation of their region, they have been enabled to survive, being the home of nearly every community event or occasion imaginable. This presentation will explore the opportunities Institutes have had to reinvent themselves in the past, and how these can give inspiration for the future custodians and caretakers to propel their Institute further into the 21st Century.
